Is it possible to be a better public speaker?

The answer to this question is clearly yes. Otherwise, it would be very brief. We all intuitively know we can improve our speaking skills and communicate better in front of others. However, we also recognize that not everyone does it naturally. This is the classic nature vs. nurture argument.

While I was on my way to a public speaking workshop, I found myself in an elevator with other people who were also going to the same workshop. They didn’t know I was doing the workshops, so they spoke openly about their expectations. One of them asked me “How can you teach someone how to public speak” which was a valid question. This question is based on my soft/airy approach to teaching public speaking. Public speaking classes usually cover topics like “engaging your audience” and “speaking in a passionate way”, but that’s where the conversation ends. This is the goal, but it is not the solution. I know that I must speak passionately and engage my audience. That is the problem. It is not possible to address the HOW in a concrete way. Find something you love to communicate passion. Okay, that’s the end of my rant. It is possible to become a better public speaker. However, it does not have to be difficult or complicated. You can practice and learn techniques, much like you would for any other sport. You don’t need to feel empowered or face your fears. Sometimes it’s as easy as not blinking so much when speaking. Seriously. You can see my point of view in any movie. They are calm, strong characters that rarely blink. Weak characters, nervous characters, liars blink. It’s impossible not to blink. However, it is possible to improve your speech and to actively avoid blinking. This simple, yet important thing can make a huge difference in your life.

It’s as simple as that. A good strategy to public speech or to become a better communicator must be something that you can do regardless of your inner state (e.g nerves, shyness, etc.). You will be able to focus on your natural reactions and not what you are saying during your speech if you try to change them. It is difficult to be the person you want to be. This is not about improving in one week. You can do it by practicing your speech for the next week and trying to speak as long without blinking as possible. This will make you appear stronger and more confident. It will also force you to look at your audience.
